Little-Known Facts About The Spanish Tradition Of Tapas

You cannot fail to notice the delicious tapas dishes on offer in the various bars, cafes and restaurants whenever you're visiting Spain. You just have to try tapas! The bottom line is that the urge to eat one or more of these scrumptious dishes is irresistible!

No-one can be absolutely sure as to the origin of tapas. Many different folk stories exist as to which region invented tapas and each story has its enthusiastic supporters. Fortunately, tapas has continued to develop over the years and although they are still basic dishes, they can be a delectable treat and when enjoying the company of family and friends, they are the ideal nibbles.

Socializing like this is traditionally Spanish. Tapas are not meant to replace a meal or be eaten as a meal, like the Greek meze, as many people in the west do. Rather, the Spanish will eat them as they go from bar-to-bar where along with a drink, they will have a tapa.

Additionally, tapas is hardly ever a part of home cooking in Spain. And when Spanish people are eating out, the custom is to pop into a few bars beforehand to enjoy a drink and a tapa whilst making their way to the restaurant. This custom is known as "Tapeo" where one can enjoy good company, a pre-dinner drink and prepare the palate for the meal ahead.

You'll find tapas on offer at various eateries. The somewhat romantic idea of tapas bars being decorated with tiles in various shades of red, orange, lemon and blue, oak vats and barrels, pictures of flamenco dancers and bill-posters advertising bullfights surrounding dark tables of solid mahogany illuminated by candles and of course, metal chandeliers suspended from oak beams isn't quite the reality!

You'll find great tapas in much more modern establishments complete with designer furniture and bright lights and in small, simple little cafes and bars that have basic furnishings and are quite common, indeed, the best tapas bar in Barcelona that I visit regularly is just like this. And you'll encounter people from all classes, from all ages including young children, whole families, groups of friends and couples in these lively establishments all enjoying the tapeo experience.

The next time you're in Spain, make doing "tapeo" a part of your trip!
